And there is one issue that must be addressed, that of abortion.

As the title of the post states, we are exactly three weeks from election day. These last three weeks of campaigning are huge. There are many forces that will attempt to sway you toward one candidate or the other; the media, ads, poll numbers, and the candidates themselves. I would like to challenge the readers of this blog to let one issue to sway your vote, that of the most basic fundamental right…the issue of life.

Now, we all know the basic candidate’s platforms McCain/Palin is pro-life and Obama/Biden is pro-choice. And I think a lot of Americans would say, I don’t think either one fully represents their so called values, as pro-life to McCain/Palin means anti-abortion but pro-death penalty and war in Iraq. And with Obama pro-choice is pro-abortion but anti-death penalty and war in Iraq.

And many of us probably say, “Well, that is great, but I don’t fit either candidate’s principles fully.” And so, we pick the values we find the greatest importance in, and vote on those values.

Now, let me be clear, every issue on either platform addresses life. And there are arguments for why certain issues such as taxes, welfare, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the environment should all carry heavy weight in a person’s decision on whom to vote for. There is no doubt that those issues are important and must be considered. However, none of those issues can be rightly ordered and executed if one’s argument for the most basic right of life is flawed.

There is one candidate in this election who’s view of life in its most basic form is so flawed it is unnerving.

Senator Barack Obama has been quoted in saying one should not be “punished with a baby.” Since when did new, created human life become a punishment?

He has stated that he will quickly sign the Choice Act, essentially guaranteeing this country will lose thousands of more lives a year as the Choice Act would remove laws such as parental consent, prohibition of government funding of abortion, and the outlawing of most partial birth abortions. (see article).

Furthermore, his voting record on abortion is one of the most radical of our time. The following article describes his voting record on the “Born Alive Infant Protection Act” which states if a baby survives an attempt at abortion, the baby must receive medical treatment as any live human being would. His reasoning for voting against this bill 4 times, it would seemingly hold the doctors liable, and given the wording of the bill, eventually present abortion as unconstitutional!

And Govenor Sarah Palin’s words.

The stances are very clear and very different.

My friends, it can be assured, that if Obama takes office, the pro-life movement will become increasingly harder.

The likelihood of 2 Supreme Court justices being appointed in the next term of presidency is high. Senator John McCain stands for the overturning of Roe v. Wade and has spoken that he will appoint judges of the same understanding of Roe v. Wade. Senator Barack Obama will grant even more abortion liberties and will appoint judges who will expand abortion rights. Whichever candidate wins the race will have the power to tip the Supreme Court majority either mostly in favor of right to life issues, or mostly in favor of abortion rights.

This election is not the time to abandon the pro-life/anti-abortion issue. This election is one of the most crucial elections for the next twenty to thirty years of Roe v. Wade.

Please be critical thinkers and responsible citizens who will speak up for those who are not given the opportunity to speak for themselves.
